Sports day with many, many kids!
Busy, busy, busy this morning - school trip today and Rivan and I are tagging along to take pictures for the school. It has worked well as I love the opportunity to take pictures and the school loves having pictures of the trip so now each time there is a trip on they ask if I can bring my camera - everybody happy.
All the kids safely clambered onto the bus and we followed in the car, stopping along the way at another school to collect more mums and children. As we waited behind the bus munching on a croissant a mum came running over to me and said that she needed to jump in the car as there were not enough seats on the bus for everyone. Then two minutes later another mum came running over and said she needed to come in the car too - we had to take out Ruby's car seat and cram it into the boot along with the pushchair and rucksack…. Goodness knows what would have happened if we were not there with the car - how would everyone have got to the sports day?
Unlike the other sports days we have been on this one was organised by a different school (Chauvigny) and it was a little disorganised to start with, there were also many more kids this time - 130 in total. When everyone was finally in their group, a coloured bracelet on their wrist we were able to start the actives. The weather was perfect - a little sunshine mixed with clouds and not too hot. Throughout the day the kids experienced taste tests with a blind fold on - they tasted strawberries, cheese, honey, radish, carrots and lemon. They stuck their hands into boxes with items from the forest floor and had to guess what they were, they walked on little stilts (what are these called in French please Vanessa), played the French equivalent of hop scotch and went on a treasure hunt in the woods.
At 12.15 the kids all started getting pretty hungry - I asked when we were stopping for lunch as Rivan had started raiding the pushchair for food - he went and found the remaining croissant, pulled it out of the bag and was very proud of himself to start eating it. Finally the kids broke for lunch - it transpired that no one had a watch on so did not realise the time!
Sat in a big circle under the shade of a tree we all enjoyed our picnic - Rivan was the master of scrounging crisps from all of Ruby's class mates - after he was given the first one all the kids wanted to give him one so they all started shouting his name and holding out crisps for him - he was walking round the circle stuffing crisps into his mouth as fast as he could - it made us all laugh. With the picnic over I put Rivan into the pushchair and he slept for a good hour to recharge his batteries - this gave me an opportunity to take a walk into the woods where the pushchair could not go and take pictures of the treasure hunt.
The afternoon passed quickly and too soon it was time to load everything and everyone back into the bus. With my two safely strapped in, drinks and strawberries to refresh them and get them through the afternoon we headed home. Within 5 minutes of being on the road Ruby had sunk into a deep sleep - I failed at keeping her awake and was not able to wake her until we got home - all that fresh air and running around!
