14th August - Bike race
August in France - you would normally think of hot sunny days and balmy sunny evenings, perfect weather for holidaying - right? Well actually NO - it appears that we had our summer in spring, our spring in summer so who knows what autumn and winter holds for us. As every year the 14th August is the start of the festivities - a big bike race round the local villages and then a huge fete on the 15th. Today we had been invited to watch the bike race down at Dawn's - a perfect vantage point to sit and watch the cyclists and enjoy a glass of wine. Sadly the weather let us down - it started dry but then the rain came and continued for most of the afternoon, but this did not stop our enjoyment - we watched from the sofa and rushed outside every time we heard a horn or a whistle telling us of the impending arrival of cyclists.
I explained that there were several different categories to the race - the professionals (those with really tight bums), the veterans (those with tight bums but grey hair) and then the junior section - so each time the cyclists completed another lap of the course we tried to work out which category they were in. A great feast was laid on by our beautiful host - spicy pork with rhubarb (which was delicious), noodles, chocolate cake, ice cream and banana for the kids and great company with lots of laughter.
The beautiful Mr Hamilton (chocolate lab) was brilliantly behaved and after a while finally rested and fell asleep - catching 40 winks before he had to be on duty again. Thanks for a great afternoon and shelter to watch the race. I keep my fingers crossed for fine weather tomorrow as so much hard work goes on throughout the year to make the festivities on the 15th August a success.
